Radon:

Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless, radioactive gas that is released from soil and rocks beneath a home. According to the EPA, it is responsible for approximately 21,000 lung cancer deaths in the United States per year. Central Kentucky is a radon hot spot. Over one-half of homes tested in Lexington have elevated radon levels with an average radon level of 8.2 picocuries per liter compared with 1.3 pCi/L nationwide.

Your family does not have to be exposed to elevated radon! Every home can have a low radon level. Some are naturally low and some require the installation of a radon mitigation system, typically costing $2,000-$4,000. Home buyers should have a professional radon measurement conducted prior to purchase. Sellers will often pay for the mitigation system if an elevated radon level is documented by a certified radon measurement professional who is not associated with a mitigation company.

Steven E. Rice has been measuring radon since 1986 and is the only Kentucky company credentialed by both the National Environmental Health Association's National Radon Proficiency Program as a Residential Radon Measurement Provider, ID #100741 RT and by the National Radon Safety Board as a Radon Measurement Specialist, Certification #NRSB SSA034. All radon measurements incorporate two separate test devices to document precision as part of a comprehensive quality assurance-quality control program. Multiple tamper detection methodologies are implemented and analysis is by a National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP) credentialed laboratory. This is the most authoritative radon measurement available in Kentucky and will be accepted by both the buyer and the seller of a home.
